Why finding the right hair extension shade matters
The single biggest reason customers exchange or return DIY hair extensions is the wrong shade. A close colour match disappears into your natural hair. A mismatch is visible across a room. Muse stocks over 30 colour-matched DIY tape-in shades, but choosing the right one without picking up each weft in person can feel overwhelming.
This quiz is built around the same descriptive language we use on our product pages. When you pick the option that sounds most like your hair, you're matched to the two shades whose actual product descriptions use those exact words. The shade you see on screen is the shade you'll receive in the box, with the same wording from question to result.
How the quiz works
Five questions, about 60 seconds:
- Question 1. Pick your natural hair colour family — black, brunette, blonde, or red.
- Question 2. Choose the description that sounds closest to your hair, written in our actual catalogue language.
- Question 3. Tell us your current hair length so we can recommend the right extension length to add.
- Question 4. Tell us your goal — more volume, more length, or a full transformation.
- Question 5. A quick attribution question that helps us understand where our customers find us.
Your result shows the two Muse shades that best match your description, in the recommended length, with one-click Add to Cart so you can checkout straight away.
Tips for picking your shade with confidence
Match the ends of your hair, not the roots. Tape-in extensions sit at mid-length and ends of your natural hair, so the colour you want to match is wherever your hair fades to at the ends. If you have balayage, root stretch, or grown-out highlights, match the lighter ends, not the darker root.
Photograph in natural daylight. Indoor lighting (especially yellow tungsten bulbs) distorts hair colour. Take your reference photo near a window during the day to see your true tone.
If you're between shades, go slightly darker. A slightly darker extension blends into the ends of natural hair better than a lighter one. Lighter extensions can stand out at the bond; darker ones blend invisibly.
Order a sample swatch ring if unsure. If your hair colour is dimensional or you're between two recommended shades, order a sample swatch ring to compare both options against your hair in person before buying.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the hair extension shade quiz?
The quiz uses the same shade-matching language found on each Muse product page, so the result reflects how we describe each shade in our catalogue. It is a strong starting guide, but it is not a replacement for our human colour match team. If you want a personal review, submit a free colour match request with a photo of your hair in natural daylight and our team will email you back within 24 hours.
What if I'm between two shades?
Most customers fit between two shades. The quiz returns two recommended shades for that reason. If you can't decide, order a sample swatch ring to compare both shades against your hair in natural light before buying. We also offer free colour exchanges as long as the security ties haven't been removed from the wefts.
Can I exchange the extensions if my shade doesn't match?
Yes. We offer free colour exchanges within 14 days of delivery, as long as the security ties on the wefts are still intact and the kit is unopened. Once the ties are removed or the wefts are altered, we cannot exchange. Always check the colour against your hair in natural daylight before opening the kit.
What if the recommended length is out of stock?
If the exact length the quiz recommends is out of stock, the result page will note this and link you to the product page where you can either pick a different length, or join the waitlist for the recommended length to be notified when it returns.
How do I shade match if my hair has highlights or balayage?
Match the ends of your hair, not the roots. Extensions sit at mid-length and ends of your natural hair, so the colour you want to match is the lightest tone, not the darker root colour. The quiz includes specific options for highlights and root stretch hair, designed to give the right recommendation for dimensional colour.
Are Muse DIY hair extensions suitable for fine or thinning hair?
For fine hair where definition is still visible, yes. For very thin hair where the scalp is visible at the parting, we don't recommend extensions because the wefts can show through. If you are unsure, submit a free colour match request and our team will give you an honest answer.
Do you ship hair extensions internationally?
Yes. Australian orders ship from Perth with free shipping nationwide. USA orders ship from Utah with free shipping. We also ship to NZ, UK, Canada, and Europe with rates calculated at checkout.
How long do Muse DIY tape-in extensions last?
Each install lasts about 4 weeks in your hair before the wefts need to be moved up to match natural growth. The wefts themselves are reusable for up to 9 months with proper care, giving you 8 to 10 installs from a single kit.
