How to Remove DIY Tape In Hair Extensions Without Damage

Table of Contents

Removing tape in extensions is genuinely simpler than applying them. The bond is designed to break down with oil. The trick is patience and not pulling, ever, even when it looks like the weft should be coming off.

This is the full removal guide for Muse DIY tape ins, written so you can do it without damaging your own hair or wasting the wefts. The same wefts can be reused for up to 9 months across 4 to 5 retape cycles.

When to remove your tape ins

A correctly applied set lasts 6 to 9 weeks before needing removal and retape. You'll know it's time when:

    • You can see the wefts when you part your hair (your roots have grown out, the bond has shifted down)
    • The weft tops feel raised against your scalp when you run your fingers through
    • You're due for your colour and need the wefts off first
    • One or two wefts have started slipping (replace those, don't pull, but plan a full removal soon)

Don't try to extend past 9 weeks. By that point the bonds are matted at the top by your own grown out hair and removal becomes harder, not easier.

    What you need

Best option: Muse Hair Extension Removal Solution

We're updating our remover bottles right now, so if you bought your kit recently you may not have remover yet. Coconut oil works as a temporary alternative and is what we recommend until the new bottles ship.

    You'll need:

    • Muse remover OR a small bowl of coconut oil
    • A wide tooth comb
    • Hair clips for sectioning
    • An old towel
    • A mirror you can angle
    • Time. Don't rush this.

    Step by step removal

    Step 1: Section the hair

Work in horizontal sections from the bottom of your head up. Clip everything above the bottom row out of the way. This gives you clean access to one row of wefts at a time.

    Step 2: Saturate the bond

Apply remover (or coconut oil) generously along the top of the weft, where it bonds to your hair. You want the oil/remover to seep INTO the adhesive, not just sit on top. Push it in with your fingers if you need to.

Step 3: Wait. This is the most important step

Walk away for 5 to 10 minutes. Or 15 if using coconut oil. The oil needs time to break down the adhesive bond. If you try to peel the weft after 30 seconds you'll either damage your hair or rip the weft and waste it.

Use the time to apply oil to the next section so it can sit while you work on the first.

Step 4: Slide the weft out

After waiting, gently slide the weft DOWNWARD along the hair shaft. It should release smoothly. If it doesn't:

    • Apply more remover/oil
    • Wait another 5 minutes
    • Try again

NEVER pull, yank, or peel the weft sideways. If it's not sliding cleanly, it needs more oil and more time, that's it.

Step 5: Clean the weft for reuse

The weft will have residual adhesive on it. Lay it flat on a paper towel, fold the paper over, and gently rub. Most of the residue lifts off. Then you can apply a fresh tape tab from the retape kit and the weft is ready for the next install.

Step 6: Repeat for each weft

Work systematically up the head. Don't skip around. Bottom row first, then next row up, all the way to the top. Total time for a full removal: 30 to 45 minutes.

Caring for your hair right after removal

    • Wash with a clarifying shampoo to lift any remaining oil residue
    • Deep condition the lengths and ends, your own hair has been carrying weight for 6 to 9 weeks and needs moisture
    • Don't apply new wefts immediately if you can avoid it. Give your scalp 24 hours to breathe, ideally 48
    • Clarify before reapplication following the same prep routine as the first install

    Reusing the wefts

The hair is reusable for up to 9 months. After removal, store the cleaned wefts:

    • Lay flat in a dry container, NOT folded or twisted
    • Out of direct sunlight
    • Away from humidity (not in the bathroom)

When you're ready to reapply, peel a fresh tape tab from your Retape Kit and apply it to the back of the weft. The retape kit is $39 and contains enough tabs for one full retape cycle.

After 4 to 5 retape cycles (roughly 9 months), the hair starts to thin at the ends and it's time for a new kit.

When NOT to remove the wefts yourself

    • If a weft has matted into your own hair at the top. This happens when removal is delayed past 9 weeks. Get a hairdresser to remove it, they have stronger remover and the experience to free the matt without cutting hair.
    • If you've coloured your hair recently and it feels fragile. Wait 7 days post colour before removal.
    • If two or more wefts have already slipped halfway and tangled into the rest of the hair. Same fix, hairdresser visit.

Otherwise it's a 30 to 45 minute job you can do at the kitchen table while watching Netflix.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you remove DIY tape in extensions?

Apply remover or coconut oil to the bond, wait 5 to 15 minutes for the oil to break down the adhesive, then gently slide the weft downward off the hair shaft. Never pull or peel sideways. Clean the weft with paper towel for reuse.

Can I use coconut oil to remove tape in extensions?

Yes. Coconut oil is a fine alternative to commercial tape extension remover. It takes longer to work (10 to 15 minutes vs 5 minutes for remover) but breaks down the adhesive cleanly without damaging hair.

How long does it take to remove a full set of tape ins?

30 to 45 minutes. The actual sliding takes a couple of seconds per weft, but the oil needs to soak in for 5 to 15 minutes before you start. Working in horizontal sections lets you apply oil to one row while another is soaking.

Will tape in extensions damage my hair?

Not if removed correctly. Damage happens when people peel the weft off without enough oil, or pull sideways instead of sliding down. The adhesive is designed to break down with oil and release cleanly.

Can I reuse the wefts after removal?

Yes. Muse wefts are reusable for up to 9 months across 4 to 5 retape cycles. Clean off the old adhesive with paper towel, store flat in a dry container, and apply a fresh tape tab from the Retape Kit ($39) when you're ready to reapply.

What if a weft is stuck and won't slide off?

It needs more oil and more time. Apply more remover or coconut oil, wait another 5 minutes, try again. Never pull. If after 20 minutes of soaking it still won't move, the weft is matted into your own hair and you need a hairdresser to free it.

Should I wash my hair before or after removing tape ins?

After. Wash with a clarifying shampoo immediately after removal to lift any remaining oil residue. Then deep condition the lengths.

How often should I remove and reapply my tape ins?

Every 6 to 9 weeks. By 9 weeks your own hair has grown out enough that the bonds are visible and starting to mat at the top. Going past that makes removal harder, not easier.
